DAY 33: Normal life remains disrupted in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Normal life was disrupted in Kashmir for the 33rd straight day on Wednesday as curfew in some parts and restrictions in the rest of the Valley continued amidst the separatist-led protest programme.
Curfew continued to remain in force in parts of the summer capital Srinagar and Anantnag town, a police official said here.
Curfew is in force in five police stations in downtown (interior) area of Srinagar city and Anantnag town in south Kashmir,” the official said.
He said restrictions on assembly of four or more people were in force in rest of the Valley as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
The official said the situation across the valley has showed signs of improvement since Monday as army personnel were helping police and paramilitary forces at many places to keep troublemakers away from the roads.
However, schools, colleges, business establishments, petrol pumps and private offices remained closed while public transport remained off the roads.
The attendance in government offices and banks was also thin, the official said.
Mobile Internet services continued to remain snapped in the entire Valley where the outgoing facility on prepaid connections is also barred.
According to a police handout issued late in the evening, about 300 miscreants assembled near Sangrama in the jurisdiction of Police Station Tarzoo, Sopore and started pelting stones on  the police party. Later on they were chased away by using mild force.
“About 50 miscreants assembled near Lassipora area of Sogam, Kupwara and tried to block the Kupwara-Sogam road by pelting stones on the civilian vehicles.
In order to ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic, the Police/Security forces chased the miscreants away. One person Shabir Ahmad Lone resident of Lassipora was injured. He was shifted to District Hospital Kupwara for treatment. His condition is stated to be stable.
About 500 miscreants assembled near village Qaimoh, Kulgam and started pelting stones on the deployment.
In Srinagar a group of miscreants pelted stones on security force deployments near Tatoo Ground and Noor Bagh and tried to disrupt the flow of civilian traffic. They were chased away, police said
Boat rally carried out in Anantnag: Reports from Anantnag on Wednesday said that hundreds of people carried out a boat rally on the river Jhelum from Urnhall to Pazalpora, close to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s hometown of Bijbehara. While waving Pakistani national flags and shouting pro-Pakistan, pro-Azadi and anti-India slogans, participants dispersed peacefully as Police and security forces did not confront the rally.
Meanwhile, the separatist camp has extended the shutdown call in Kashmir till August 12.
Kashmir has witnessed protests after Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces on July 8.
As many as 55 persons, including two cops, were killed and several thousand others were injured in the clashes between protestors and security forces.
