JAMMU: Medicines worth lakhs and costly medical equipments were destroyed in a fire inside drug store of Government Medical College and Hospital, here at Bakshi Nagar on late Monday night.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire which broke out under mysterious circumstances engulfed large piles of medicines placed in the drug store which usually is not the case as medicines are often placed on racks meant for the purpose. Giving details, the police spokesperson said that fire consumed medicines worth lakhs even as fire tenders tried to fight the large fire. “The matter is being investigated and the reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained,” he added.
The GMC in past had also remained in news for not so good reasons including shortage of medicine stocks and even spurious medicines and people on the spot alleged that this incident could be an attempt to put a veil on similar act and were apprehensive of sabotage behind the mysterious fire.
Health Minister Bali Bhagat visited GMC and took stock of the damages and enquired about the probable cause behind the incident.
Meanwhile, BJP State President and MLA Sat Sharma (C.A), after getting the information of fire and resultant losses reached the spot to assess damages caused to the health equipments and medicines.
He asked the GMC Principal to conduct an inquiry and also prepare the details of losses.
Sharma said that precautionary measures should be taken to avoid such type of mishaps in the hospital. He was accompanied by Dr. Zahid Geelani, Principal GMC, Superintendent Dr. Ramesh Gupta, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Davinder Singh, Chopra Nursing Home Incharge Dr. Sanjeev and party leaders including Ayodhya Gupta, Prem Gupta, Jeet Angral and Ankush Sharma.
