LMD recovers Rs 32,000 as penalty from unscrupulous traders

KATHUA: Intensifying its drive to protect the consumers from exploitation by the unscrupulous traders, the officers of Legal Metrology Department headed by Ajay Kumar Verma, Assistant Controller Legal Metrology Kathua conducted extensive checking of various business establishment at Kathua , Basholi, Passi, Kuthlair, Basantpur, Hiranagar, Haripur, Marheen, Chadwal, Dayalachack, Garnari, Pathwal and adjoining areas. Vicky Sharma Inspector Legal Metrology Kathua and Devi Lakhanpuria , Inspector Legal Metrology Dayalachack accompanied the inspection team.
During inspection of more than 100 traders of different business establishments, among others traders, the traders of Karyana shops, Atta Chacki, ration dealers , cement dealers , courier services, mustartd oil dealers, rice mills, general stores ,bakery units, poultry sellers, meat sellers, hardware stores, sweet shops were inspected for their compliance with regard to various provisions of J and K Standard of Weights and Measures Enforcement Act 2011(Amended) and Packages Commodities rules.
In all 24 Challans of traders were booked for violations of various provisions, out of these 12 were booked for violation of Packages Commodities Rules, seven for non production of verification certificate at the time of inspection and four for non re-verification of weighing and measuring instruments on the due date.
The department booked one cement dealer, rice mill, and mustard oil dealer for violation of Packages Commodities Rules and on admission of the offence by the traders and with the request and assurance of the traders not to repeat the same fault in future, the Challans were compounded and penalty of Rs 20,000 was imposed on three traders. In all 17 Challans of the booked traders were compounded and penalty of Rs 32,000 was imposed for violation of various provisions of J and K Standard of Weights and Measures Enforcement Act 2011(Amended) and Packages Commodities Rules and notices were issued to the remaining booked traders for further legal proceedings.
