It was former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who, in 2003, came up with the idea of connecting India and Iran so that India could grow commercially and geo-politically with the rich areas of Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia to reach as far as Russia and Europe.
However, the subsequent UPA Governments made a mess of this vision only to please the US, in order to secure a nuclear deal. On the other hand, Pakistan never wants India to emerge as a great power. Hence, it did not let the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project to see the light of the day. It is promising that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made tremendous effort to fullfill Vajpayee’s dream by bringing fresh thinking on Chabahar. A great strategic victory against Pakistan’s evil designs is on the cards. An Asian miracle is in the offing.
