JAMMU: Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu (JU) on Tuesday organised one-day Environmental Awareness Programme on the theme ‘Solid Waste Management’ in Government Higher Secondary School, Satwari adopted as Model School by university.
Prof. R.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor JU was the Chief Guest who stressed upon the need of changing the lavish and wasteful life style, use of less packaged material and being more responsible individuals. Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs JU urged upon the need to transform our conceptual knowledge about environment into contextual knowledge.
Prof. Mubarkh Singh, Nodal Director, Model School Cluster of JU, presented brief report of series of activities taken up by the university in the school during last one year.
Prof. A. K. Raina, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, JU introduced the theme of the awareness programme and impressed upon the significance of individual efforts in waste minimization and management. M.L. Sharma, Principal, Govt. Higher Secondary School, Satwari, highlighted various priority areas in which the university can contribute for holistic development of the school.
Dr. Deepika Slathia, Department of Environmental Sciences, presented formal vote of thanks. Other members and officers from the University present during the programme included Prof. R. K. Rampal, Prof. Renu Nanda, Dr. Piyush Malaviya, Dr. Rewa Khajuria, Dr. Neeraj Sharma and research scholars of Department of Environmental Sciences.
Later, Anuradha, Scientist, State Pollution Control Board demonstrated the collection, segregation and sustainable utilization of biodegradable waste by using composting method to the students of the school. The faculty members and Research Scholars of the department also interacted with the school students and discussed about various measures to combat environmental/issues problems prevailing in the State.
