JAMMU: To check the rampant use of plastic material and other non-biodegradable material in the offices and the official functions, the State Government headed by Mehbooba Mufti is all set to become eco-friendly in the near future.
On Wednesday the General Administration Department (GAD) issued a circular directing all the administrative secretaries to ensure the use of non-plastic material/stationary items like paper, hand paper, jute and other biodegradable substitutes in the departments and subordinate administrative units, under their charge, and also the official functions.
It may be mentioned that genuine concerns were raised regarding the improper and unscientific disposal of the plastic waste in the govt offices which could have serious consequences in the long run.
“Besides being hazardous and non-biodegradable in nature, this substance has the potential to adversely impact the environment, the State Government circular dated May 4, 2016 stated.
“In order to put an end to the indiscriminate use of plastic material in the government offices/official functions, there was an urgent need for switching over to the non-plastic and eco-friendly material. It would, therefore, be necessary to discontinue the use of plastic material/stationary items in the government offices immediately”, the GAD circular stated.
