Villagers demand shifting of ammunition depot

JAMMU: The people of village Kanyala, Kahpota, Madeen, Jandrah, Nagola, Ponthel, etc. led by social activist and Congress leader Rakesh Wazir met Deputy Commissioner, Jammu Simrandeep Singh and apprised him of the problems being faced by the arbitrary orders which prohibit the villagers from doing any repair, construction, modification etc. within radius of 1 KM area of the 15 ammunition depot Kanyala.
He was also informed that even the Rural Development Department is stopped from doing the small works including the works of MGNREGA etc.
Wazir demanded that on the pattern of Kashmir, the case be recommended to government for shifting of this ammunition depot to some other site and lands of the villagers be handed over to the owners.
Wazir told that the depot was commissioned some 50 years back and the lands of the people were taken on small rents which even after so many years have just reached Rs 800 to 1,300 per year per kanal and people were dislocated and after a gap of 50 years when people were able to make some shelters on their heads outside the depot they are again being stopped from making any repairs, constructions or any other modifications even on their own lands and even government works including repairs of schools, wells, ponds etc. are stopped on the pretext of risk and on the other hand their own constructions are going on in full swing including Schools, Huts, Residential quarters, Clubs etc.
Deputy Commissioner assured for early redressel of the issue.
The prominent among those present on the occasion include Capt.Shiv Lal Dhingra,Serpanch Mohan Lal Mengi,Bishan Dass,Karan Dutt,Romesh Kumar,Mohan Lal Dhingra,Naib Serpanch Sanjay Kumar,Dhodu Ram,Ravi Kumar,Balak Ram,Abdul Karim etc.
