JAMMU: To commemorate the Balidan Divas of Dr Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, State BJP unit on Tuesday organised a function in which senior party functionaries paid rich tributes to Dr Mookherjee. The progarmme was organized jointly by Jammu District President Rajesh Gupta and District President Jammu West Subash Jandial.

Speaking on the occasion, Jugal Kishore said “Dr Mookherjee sacrificed his life while agitating to end the permit system under which any one leaving or entering the State had to obtain a permit a practice which did not exist in any other state of the country”.

In his address, Shamsher Singh Manhas said, “Person like Mookherjee are very rare and their life serves a source of inspiration for generations to come and as far as BJP is concern Dr Mookherjee is a source of inspiration for entire BJP cadre. It was due to his sacrifices which led to the obligation of the past practice of having Prime Minister in J and K.”

MLC Ashok Khajuria recalled the sacrifice made by the patriot for the integration of Jammu and Kashmir into the nation. He said that Mookherjee laid down his life opposing the system of having two sets of laws for Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country. He said, “Prior to his sacrifice, the Indian Constitution was not imposed in J&K and Indian citizens had to obtain permit to enter the State.

Farooq Khan said, “Mookerjee died on 23rd June, 1953 in the custody of the State Government at that time when he was arrested for violating J-K’s Special Status during his “Ek Desh Mein Do Vidhan, Do Pradhan And Do Nishan Nahi Chalenge (A single country can’t have two Constitutions, two prime ministers, and two national emblems) campaign.”

“Dr Mookherjee became martyr for the sake of unity and integrity of the country. His martyrdom resulted in abolition of ‘Do Pradhan – Do Nishan’ and also brought the state of J&K under the purview of Supreme Court, Election Commission and CAG. The real tribute to Dr Mukherjee will be only when the Article 370 is abrogated in Jammu and Kashmir and called upon the cadres to create awareness among the people over this,” he said.
