JAMMU: Hundreds of refugees who fled Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during the Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965 and 1971 today observed World Refugees’ Day in memory of their family members killed during the fights with tribals and Pakistani Army in November 1947, 1965 and 1971.
President, Jammu and Kashmir PoJK Refugee Front, Rachpal Singh Chib claimed about 31,619 Hindu and Sikh families took shelter in the camps established by the Government of India and about 10,000 families could not join the camps due to different compelling reasons during attacks by tribals (Kabalis) and Pakistani Army in 1947.
“About 50,000 men, women and children were butchered in 1947 by the Kabalis supported by Pak Army. About 500 men, women and children lost their lives in 1965 and about 400 men, women and children lost their life in 1971,” he claimed.
“The plight of the displaced families of J&K has not improved even after 67 years of their displacement,” he said adding that the financial packages included, allotment of the land to the camp families of 1947, 1965 and 1971 at different scales on the basis of Camp Refugees and Non-Camp Refugees was not implemented till date.
