First batch of trekkers leaves for Dharamsala

JAMMU:  The first batch of Tawi Trekkers J and K, comprising 49 students including girls of Oriental Academy Higher Secondary School, here on Friday left for Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh to participate in the silver jubilee Himalayan trekking programme.

The group, led by Joint Secretary of the Club, Sonam Sidharth also includes four teachers of the school, Nishu Dubey, Bhumesh, Jyoti and Manika Sharma as also Manik Slathia, a trained mountaineer of Ibex Adventure Club, Samba.

The group was flagged off by Administrator of the School, Vivek Chauhan from MA Stadium, here in the presence of Senior Vice President and General Secretary of Tawi Trekkers J and K, Ram Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria respectively. A large number of members of the club and parents of the participants were also present on the occasion.

A total of about 400 boys and girls in the age group of 10 to 14 years mainly from Oriental Academy Higher Secondary School, Jammu, Shiksha Niketan group of Schools,  Shangrilla Public School, Sarwal,  St. Xavier Senior Secondary School, Barnai, Jammu, R M Public School, Chowadi, Jammu and J K Public School, Panjtirthi, Jammu  have so far enrolled themselves for the two silver jubilee Himalayan Programmes being organized by Tawi Trekkers at Dharamshala and Moungri in district Udhampur this year.

However, with confirmation of participation pending from some potential schools of Udhampur, RS Pura and Jammu the figure is likely to cross the 600 mark.

The purpose of these programmes is to initiate young boys and girls into outdoor life by offering them a low budget, well organized and properly supervised adventure activity and thus inculcate in them the spirit of adventure and love of nature.
