JAMMU: Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET), Jammu celebrated the ‘World Telecommunication and Information Society Day’ under the student chapter of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) in collaboration with IETE Jammu Center. The underlying theme for celebrating this day was ‘Telecommunications and ICT: Drivers of Innovation’.

On the occasion, Dr. Rakesh Vaid, Honourary Chairman IETE from Jammu University was the Chief Guest, while Dr. Parveen Lehana, Honourary Secretary IETE was the Guest of Honour.

The function started with a welcome address by Jamini Sharma, HoD ECE Department wherein he set a platform for the session based on the current theme. He also highlighted the importance of the ICT, social dependency and its usage in every sphere of human life.

Prof. S.K Sharma, Principal MIET provided a detailed overview of the evolution of the technology in this domain and encouraged the students to be more innovative and embrace out-of-the-box thinking.

Dr. Parveen Lehana, Honourary Secretary IETE delivered the technical keynote address on ‘Entangled Quantum Physics’.

Dr. Ankur Gupta, Joint Director MIET spoke on the relevance of World Telecom Day and showcased the various innovations at MIET. He highlighted the PI 360 analytics software the ‘Silent Zone’ mobile application developed at MIET. MIET has so far filed 11 patents at the Indian Patents Office. He encouraged the students to be more tech-savvy and work on interdisciplinary projects to hone their technical skills.

The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Surbhi Sharma, convener of the ISTE Student Chapter.

The inaugural session was followed by inter college paper presentation on various topics based on the theme and project exhibition cum competition, where 9 teams from MIET, MBSCET and GCET participated. First position in the Project competition was won by Wakas Hassan and Nusrat Ali from MIET. Their project was titled ‘Implantation of frequency hop Optical CDMA to increase number of concurrent users in high traffic LAN systems’.

Pallavi Prasher from MBSCET won first prize in the paper presentation.
