Excise sleuths foil smuggling of forest produce

KATHUA: Continuing with the efforts to thwart the attempts of tax evaders, the sleuths of Excise Department on Tuesday detected forest products being exported out of the State.
The attempt of evasion was detected by the active staff of the department when two trucks bearing registration No. HR55E-4575 and HR55K-7775 were put to physical check and it was revealed that the documents accompanying the goods depicted dry dates in both the vehicles but actually these were loaded with dry dates and forest products.
The forest products detected during the physical check were Wowring, Majaphal, Mushakbala that were being transported without valid documents and without the required clearance from the Forest Department.
The whole exercise was conducted by the team of Excise Department under the supervision of Rajesh Sharma Dy. Excise Commissioner, Toll Post Lakhanpur and comprised of Excise and Taxation Officers Suresh Sharma, Naeem Mugal and Sahil Jandyal and Inspectors Adarsh Sharma, Amit Sharma, Dheeraj Kumar and Swaran Singh and Sub-Inspector Brij Pal Singh and Excise Guards Mohd. Aslam, Mohd. Shakeel, Nihal Singh and Vinay Kumar.
The vehicles along with seized goods will be referred to the Forest Department after realising of penalty under the J and K Levy of Tolls Act.
