As Mothers Day is being celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May (This year 10th May) with customary zeal the dismal performance of India on social front is shocking. India has slipped further in the annual analysis of the world’s best place for mother, ranking 140th behind countries like Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Iraq. The 179-nation annual Index is based on five indicators related to maternal health, education, income level and status of women. This year America dropped from number 31 on the list to 33 behind Japan, Poland and Crotia. American women have a one in 1,800 risk of maternal death. Scandavian countries have consistently taken the lead in the Mothers’ Index with Norway on the top as far as mother care is concerned. Socially we are very poor in the standing when it comes to women empowerment. A large segment of women in India do not have access to the toilet facilities, most of them are illiterates as far as heath care for women and the girl child is concerned. Many of Indian cities have nothing to boost and presents a dismal scenario. Education sector is another segment which remained away from them. Every year Govt spends large amount on publicity and promotion of women health and security for girl child schemes but when it comes the grass-root level the impact is not visible and there is hardly any improvement for both and remains relegated to secondary position in the male dominated Indian society. The craving for male child has killed many girl child in womb itself despite a ban on sex determination tests throughout the country. In a society where women have so many restrictions in terms of poor access to education, healthcare, dietary preferences and over that treated as a commodity in the matrimonial market with a heavy dowry rider, the holding of Mothers’ Day celebrations have very little significance and meaning.
