New Delhi : The Delhi High Court has upheld the ten-year jail term awarded by a trial court to a Pakistani national for possessing drugs.

Justice S. Muralidhar upheld the conviction of Mohd. Afzal Wednesday and the order was released Monday.

Afzal was arrested Dec 23, 2006, with a bag containing 2 kg of heroin near PVR Plaza in Connaught Place in New Delhi area.

According to police, Afzal went to Connaught Place to deliver the bag of heroin to his Punjabi contacts.

He was convicted and sentenced for ten years in jail by a trial court in September 2010. The trial court also slapped him with a fine of Rs.1 lakh.

Afzal later challenged the trial court verdict.

The high court said: “The court is of the view that no error was found. The case against the appellant (Afzal) for the offence under Section 21 (c) (punishment for contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and when contravention involves commercial quantity) of NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act has been proved beyond reasonable doubt.”

It said the sentence awarded to Afzal by the trial court does not call for interference and dismissed his appeal.(Agency)
