JAMMU: A group of 35 students, including 12 girls of Sprawling Buds School, Chinore in Jammu visited
the world famous Wadia Museum of Geology in the GGM Science College, here on Friday.
Students were thrilled to see the 11 ft 3 inches long fossilized tusk of an ancestor of present day elephant which roamed the Shivalik hills more than a million years ago.
The ‘floating rock’ called Pumis also excited the curious small children. It is said that Lord Rama used this rock to make a bridge between Ramaswaram in India to Lanka. The small pieces of rocks called Meteorites which fall on the Earth from the space were also keenly watched by the students. They were also surprised to see a flexible rock called Itacalumite. It was also a learning experience for the mesmerized students to see fossilized impressions of leaves which existed on the Earth over 200 millions years back. They were also amazed to find radioactive minerals and precious stones in their original rock form kept in the museum.
The students along with their teacher Renu Bala were taken around the museum by Head of the Department of Geology Dr C.K Khajuria who brief them about the fossils, rocks and minerals and other specimens kept in the museum.
He apprised the students that the Museum was established by Padam Bhushan Dr. D.N Wadia in the year 1912 and has over 20,000 specimens of geological importance. The students also visited “Wadia Chamber” in the department where over
100 years old Chair and Table along with equipment, books and journals belonging to Dr D.N Wadia have been kept.
