JAMMU: Sumit Khajuria and Shilpa Charak, who recently scaled Yunam Peak (20050ft) in Lahaul area of Himachal Pradesh were felicitated by Tawi Trekkers J&K, here in a special function held here.
Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) had deputed a small 4-member team comprising Sumit Khajuria (leader), Shilpa Charak, Sourav Deep Singh and Suhail Mushtaq to Leh for an expedition to Kang Yatse peak (20500ft).
The team had plans also to scale another 20000ft+ peak. But as ill luck would have it due to certain reasons the team had to retrace their steps when they had reached at an altitude of about 20000 ft on Mount Yatse. Whereas Sourav Deep Singh and Suhail Mushtaq returned to their respective places after this expedition Sumit Khajuria and Shilpa Charak went ahead and were successful on Mount Yunam.
For Sumit Khajuria it was 6th successful expedition, Shilpa Charak, a student of GGCW Parade and an international sport climber, was on her maiden expedition after completing her Advance Mountaineering Course in 2018. The expedition was sponsored by J&K Sports Council.
Neelam Khajuria, member J&K Service Selection Board was the chief guest, who along with the presiding guest former Legislator, Ashwani Sharma, and patron of the Club, Rahul Sharma honoured Sumit Khajuria and Shilpa Charak.
Also present were Parveen Sharma, Chairman, The Citizen’s Co-operative Bank Ltd; Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Chairman, Team Jammu; Ram Khajuria, president and Shawetica Khajuria, general Secretary of Tawi Trekkers.
Prominent among others present included Arti Sharma, Director Apple Kids International Pre School, Bantalab, Jammu; Prof. Suman Lata, Director Physical Education, Govt College for Women, Parade; Vivek Chauhan, Principal Oriental Academy; Advocate Vikas Suri, Sushil Singh, Rakesh Goswami and Navneet Gupta of Mountaineering Association of J&K and Narinder Singh Slathia, Vishali Sharma,
Binderpal Singh and Sunil Chakharia, senior members of Tawi Trekkers besides Shivani Charak,
an international sport climber and her father Jamit Singh Charak; Vaibhav Sharma and Diksha.
