Cycling carries huge socio-economic, environmental message: Div Com

SRINAGAR: Reviving cycling as a norm to lower global warming, World Bicycle Day was celebrated by Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) Srinagar, Directorate of Youth Services and Sports and Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council on Friday as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
A total of 245 cyclists from different areas of District Srinagar both male and female participated in the event.
The event was flagged off by P.K Pole, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, from iconic location Lal Chowk Srinagar covering a distance of 7.5 Km culminated at Botanical Garden Chashmashahi Srinagar. This rally envisages to enhance the spirit of brotherhood, nationalism and to popularise the usage of cycle to solve the dual issues of global warming and unhealthy life style.
Addressing the participants, the Div Com said besides being a sports activity, cycling carries a huge socio-economic and environmental message. He also said that such unique initiatives should be organized more often, adding that the purpose of this rally is to create awareness about cycling among people so that cycling becomes a daily routine for fitness and a measure to safeguard the environment. Nuzhat Gul, Secretary J&K Sports Council, Bashir Ahmad Joint Director DYSS Kashmir, Nuzhat Farooq and Nusrat Gazala, Divisional Sports Officers, Balbir Singh District Sports Officer DYSS, Srinagar, Officials from Nehru Yuva Kendra, Shabir Khan, SDPO Kothibagh Police Station besides other officers and officials from Sports Council and other government departments were present at the occasion.
