JAMMU: To curb the menace of overcharging , cheating and unfair trade practices which are used to fleece the parents of school going children, seven publishers from New Delhi, Chennai and Jammu have been booked.
According to Dy Controller Legal Metrology Enforcement Jammu Manoj Prabhakar, the checking squad comprising Inspector Pooja and Rohit Gupta conducted extensive checking in Jammu city areas and seized a large number of deceptive books and notebooks.
The publishers who have been booked include M/S Small Wonders, New Delhi, Pearson India Education Services Noida, 3 Navneet Education Ltd, Ahmadabad Distributor: S R Enterprises, Bakshi Nagar, Cambridge University Press, Daryagang, Delhi, Ved Prakash and Sons, Tanda Morh, Jallandar, Sahitya Sangam Stationery /book seller (sold book Grow with Number as specimen sample not for sale on complaint basis) and Quality Manager, ITC, Chennai (Distributor: Malhotra Trading Company Nanak Nagar).
These offenders were booked under the relevant provisions of the Act for not declaring mandatory declarations required for the information of the students, smudging of price and overcharging, said Manoj Prabhakar, Dy Controller Legal Metrology Enforcement Jammu. A large number of complaints were received by the department on the restrictive trade practices adopted by the traders dealing with supply of school books and stationary items.
Acting on the directions of Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Ch Zulfkar Ali, the
officers of Legal Metrology department conducted surprise raids.
