JAMMU: In yet another case of alleged dowry death, a 27-yr-old woman was found dead at Channi Himmat, in the city suburb on Sunday. The paternal family of the lady have alleged that their daughter has been murdered.
Sheetal, 27, resident of Afgani Mohalla, had married Parveen Sharma, resident of House No 444, Sector, 4 Channi Himmat, two and half year ago. The couple had estranged relations after two years of their marriage as her mother-in-law was allegedly demanding more dowry and taunting her for not conceiving, allege Sheetal’s family members.
Last month, Sheetal had reportedly told her brother that she was beaten up inside the bathroom.
Sheetal’s family wanted her to settle for the fear of break up, which would socially bring bad name to them.
Neighbours, however, say that the couple was happily married as they went on foreign trips also. “Only investigations can dig out the facts of Sheetal’s death, they opined.
Sheetal’s younger brother Sahil Khajuria while talking to STATE TIMES said “They received a call late last night from Sheetal’s-in-laws and on reaching there they found Sheetal lying on the ground. “Her-in-laws told us that she had hanged herself and died,” Sahil said, adding, “We called police and shifted Sheetal to hospital, where doctors declared her as brought dead.
“There were lot of injury marks on her arms, face and feet. Sheetal was strangulated to death,” Sahil claimed, adding, “Parveen and his mother are making false stories that Sheetal had hanged herself.Parveen, is running a factory at Samba Industrial area under the name and style Shanker Plastic Products.
SDPO East DySP Rafiq Manhas said, “The body was lying on the ground while the room-door was broken, to gain entry, where Sheetal, according her in laws, had hanged herself.
FIR under Section 174 CrPC has been registered while Parveen Sharma has been taken into custody.
Sheetal’s body was handed over to the family after the post mortem. A board of doctors was constituted to conduct the post mortem, DySP Rafiq said.
Doctors at GMC, however, suspect that Sheetal died of strangulation. “However, even if she hanged herself to end her life, what prompted her to take such extreme step is part of investigation,” said DySP Rafiq, adding, “Her husband Parveen Sharma has been taken into custody for interrogation.”
