The proposed merger of the State Bank of India with its subsidiaries is welcome. The sooner other nationalised public sector banks follow suit, the better. A reduction in the number of public sector banks will result in a significant reduction in overhead costs. Haphazard and uncoordinated branch expansions will become a thing of past. Since merger and consolidation will be beneficial to the existing and retired employees, resistance from unions should not be allowed to shake the Government’s resolve in the matter.
