JAMMU: University of Jammu has achieved a unique distinction of being ranked 64th among the top 100 universities and colleges of the country with a score of 55.70. Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani released the ‘India Rankings 2016’ on Monday.
The university had volunteered to participate in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The objective of this ranking framework is to rank higher education institutions on verifiable and objective criteria. The process involved online submission of extensive data pertaining to different aspects of the university.
As per the communiqué of the UGC which requested universities to participate in the NIRF for Universities and Colleges, the ranking was done to study the inescapable parameters which are looked into by the students and parents whilst making an informed choice for pursuing a programme in any institution of higher learning. The objective of higher education being providing the best learning experience in an ideal environment is the ultimate objective of every institution of higher learning. This objective becomes all the more highlighted when institutions are constantly adjudged on the basis of excellence in teaching and learning, excellence in research and innovations and excellence in engagement etc.
The criteria for ranking included teaching/learning resources, Research, Professional Practice and Collaborative Performance, graduation outcomes, outreach and perception. The data for the first four parameters was submitted by the institutions and verified by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), a body constituted by the HRD ministry last year to conduct annual surveys.
For the perception criterion, feedback from various stakeholders was sought.
Expressing his satisfaction, Prof. R.D Sharma, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu said that the management, faculty, scholars/ students will maintain this odyssey and attain pinnacles of success in all the disciplines. He said, the University is credited with a dedicated faculty, staff and the resolve of the scholars and students is also encouraging.
